The Independence Pirates and NEO Golden Norsemen will both begin the season ranked in the top-10 nationally. Independence is #5 in the NJCAA preseason poll released Wednesday, while NEO is #8. Coffeyville received votes in the poll, but didn’t make the top 20.

Independence finished last season with a 9-2 overall record, winning the KJCCC league title and the Midwest Classic Bowl. Their win against NEO in that bowl game was the first bowl win for the Pirates in team history.

NEO finished last year 9-3 overall and won the SWJCFC league title. Former head coach Clay Patterson left the team in the offseason, accepting an assistant position at the University of Minnesota. Zach Allen, who has been an assistant at NEO for the last nine years, is now the head coach for the Norsemen.

The Pirates will open up the season on August 23rd @ Dodge City, while NEO will kick off the year at home against Arkansas Baptist on August 30th.
