In addition to finding a suitable pet friendly hotel, you’ll need to make sure there’s plenty of pet friendly activities for your dog to enjoy.
We have discovered some of those great travel options and we picked pet parent’s top 5 favorite destinations.
Asheville, North Carolina
Asheville is an incredibly pet-friendly city in the North Carolina mountains for so many reasons. Home to the Biltmore Estate, where dog’s are welcome to explore the grounds, Asheville boasts an astounding cultural scene with artists and musicians. Plus, this pooch-loving city is a foodie paradise filled with dog-friendly outdoor cafes, breweries and much more.
Also, being in the mountains brings Asheville’s nature scene to life, with easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway and other scenic adventures. Add in all of the pet-friendly places to go in Asheville, and it is certainly a city that’s hard to beat! There’s Chimney Rock Park, where dogs and their parents can hike the trails, as well as Graveyard Fields Loop, where dogs can enjoy splashing in the creeks and near the waterfalls. You can also choose to walk on the Urban Trail, which offers an engaging experience filled with artistic sculptures and live music. Then, when it comes time to eat, you and your pup choose from a plethora of pet friendly restaurants like Posana Café, with its great selection of fresh and delicious foods from local farmers.
It’s hard to find a city that is all together rich in history, urban, worldly and charming all at once, but Boston is all of that and much more! Add in your pup to the mix, and you two will have a great time in this New England city.
If learning about history is what you crave, then you and your pooch can take the Freedom Trail and visit all of the 16 historical stops along the way. If you are looking for the salty sea air to refresh you and your pup, how about taking the Boston Harbor Islands Dog Cruise, which offers a three-hour sightseeing tour that caters to dogs and their pet parents. Looking to relax? Then visit one of Boston’s beaches, where many are pet friendly when it is not prime season. You both can also enjoy great dining at South End Buttery, with its delectable menu for people and its fresh dog biscuits for pups from Polka Dog Bakery.
Key West, Florida
In Key West, there is a calm and relaxed atmosphere unlike any other, and in addition to the great sunsets and tropical climate, it is one of the few places to still feel the Old Florida charm. This pet friendly city is very welcoming to dogs, and there are plenty of activities to do with your pooch! You can visit the Key West Aquarium, complete with views of sharks being fed (and dogs can watch, too!), or check out the Lazy Dog, where you and your dog can paddle to a private island complete with plenty of room to splash and play! Also, you can go to Key West Dog Beach for some sand, surf and fun-in-the-sun, and when hunger kicks in, you can eat at Bo’s Fish Wagon, which is known for its Key West-style seafood!
The city of Austin is known for its artistic, musical and southern culture. It is a wonderful place for spending time outside, as the sunny days allow for residents and visiting guests to enjoy the fresh air year-round. You and your pooch will love this city for all of its dining, music, outdoor, and relaxed and refreshing offerings.
Austin is about as pet friendly as it can get, and you can take your dog with you pretty much all over the city. There are plenty of dog parks with off leash options, and a huge park actually on one of the beaches! There are hiking trails around Towne Lake, and you can go on horse-drawn carriage rides downtown, or check out the Barton Creek Farmer’s Market for specialty cheeses and locally-grown fruits and veggies. Also, you won’t want to miss the dining experience at the Spider House, a cool dog friendly dining establishment with a full bar, delicious food and live entertainment.
San Diego, California
The city of San Diego is full of sun, warmth and hospitality, as well as offering visitors places like deserts, beaches and everything in between! There are places for visitors to hike, kayak, see the sights, and experience the culture and adventure, right along with their pets. Some highlights are the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve, the Cabrillo Tide Pool Trail and Cowles Mountain, to name a few. Or, take a relaxing break at Dog Beach, with its off leash policy any time of the day and all year long. You can also visit the Westfield UTC open air shopping center, with its multiple boutique shops, and check out The Patio on Lamont Street, where people can try the great local food and their dogs can try special homemade biscuits, just for dogs!
