Update (9/25/2015): Neosho Police Department detectives have conducted an interview with a Neosho resident at a local attorney’s office in regards to the leaving the scene accident involving the death of Matthew Stevens on Sept. 12.

Based on this interview, Neosho Police have seized a 2001 Ford Escape with extensive front end damage believed to be the vehicle involved in the accident.

Formal charges will be filed with the Newton County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and an arrest warrant will be obtained for the suspect, whose name is being withheld until charges have been filed.

At 1:13 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, Neosho officers were dispatched to the area of Highway 59 and Malcom Mosby Drive in reference to a male lying in the middle of the highway. When officers arrived they located a Matthew Brooks Stevens, age 19, lying in the roadway, and he appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. The suspect vehicle had fled the scene. Paramedics arrived on scene and confirmed Mr. Stevens was dead on arrival.

On September 14 an autopsy was performed on Mr. Stevens at Cox South in Springfield, MO. Results indicated Mr. Stevens had obtained injuries resulting from being hit by a vehicle from behind.

Update (9/16/2015): The reward has been raised to $6,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the Sept. 12 hit and run death of Matthew Stevens. The reward is being offered by a private party.

Over the last several days since the incident, Neosho officers and detectives have worked numerous hours in attempts to obtain information on this incident. On September 14, Newton County Detectives joined in on the investigation.

During the investigation it was learned that two vehicles left Buck’s Bar near the intersection of D Highway and Highway 59 at a high rate of speed. The first vehicle was a black Chevy Cruze, and the second vehicle a light colored SUV. The drivers of these two vehicles are being sought for questioning due to the time frame in relation with the accident.

A private citizen has offered a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the driver in this leaving the scene accident.
