Highway 171 dedication honors atomic veterans in the 4-States

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. – Highway 171 from the Stone’s Corner roundabout to Route Z entering Carl Junction will soon be known as the Atomic Veterans Memorial Highway.

The Joplin Globe says Bernie Crosby, a Carl Junction veteran who saw the effects of high-altitude nuclear weapons tests pushed hard for years for this designation.

“There are quite a few atomic veterans in the Joplin and Pittsburg regional areas and so this is something that will be a reminder because we don’t want to forget the sacrifices they made during their time in service,” Missouri Rep. Bob Bromley states.

Crosby says the highway will honor all atomic veterans who experienced the effects of nuclear blasts and nuclear blast tests.

Crews have not yet finished the official signage, but officials hope the dedication will be complete this summer.
