Helen Louise (Craig) McGee Durham
August 12, 1920 - September 8, 2021
Helen Louise (Craig) McGee Durham, one hundred and one year old Ottawa County Educator passed away at her home on Wednesday, September 8, 2021.
Mrs. Durham was born on August 12, 1920 in Miami to William A. and Gertrude (Boyd) Craig. She received her BA from Northeastern State University and her Masters in English Literature from the University of Tulsa, and then worked to attain her ABD EdD from Pittsburg State University.
She was an active member of First Baptist church where she taught Sunday School into her 90’s and served as President of the Women’s Missionary Union. She and her husband, Shelby, were cofounders of The Village Baptist Church in OKC.
She taught preschool and elementary school in OKC, high school in Tulsa and finished her teaching career at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College as an English and Literature instructor.
She enjoyed chairing the Religious Emphasis week at NEO for a number of years. She frequently opened her home to international students and included them in family activities.
As a Mom she supported her sons as part of the Football Booster club at Miami High School and served as a Cub Scout leader and a Girl Scout leader for her children.
She later taught real estate at NEO and became a real estate broker and co-owner of Durham’s Real Estate. Mrs. Durham was preceded in passing by her parents, her husband Shelby O. McGee, her husband Reginald Durham, a son S. Ronald McGee and a brother Roger Craig.
Survivors include her children Joy McGee of Beggs, Oklahoma, Marcia Tynon of Miami, Oklahoma, Dr. Mike McGee and his wife Jeanenne of Mounds and Dr. Monty McGee and his wife Tanya of Drumright, her grandchildren Shellie Bynum and her husband Gary, Spencer Lord, Clay Tynon and his wife Tobi, Dr. Emily Tynon, Kristi Carter and her husband Mark, Hannah Davis and her husband Caleb, Lydia Salierno and her husband Shawn, Lauren Jones and her husband Lue, Kenzie Ralston and her husband Myles and Cole McGee. Also surviving are her great grandchildren Sam Bynum, Sara Bynum, Jonathan Tynon and his wife Amber, Sydney Tynon, Jack Tynon, Norah Helen Carter, Jude Carter, Hudson Davis, Ember Davis, Jamison Salierno, Easton Salierno.
Visitation will be on Sunday, September 12, 2021 from 4-6 PM at Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Miami.
Services will be 2:00 PM on Monday, September 13, 2021 at First Baptist Churches Chapel in Miami. Interment will follow at the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Miami.
The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Happy Acres Cowboy Church at PO Box 39, Kiefer, OK 74041.
