Grilling this Memorial Day weekend? You may have to pony up more money

Perhaps the sizzling sound of meat on the grill is the official sound of summer.

As we remember those who have fallen to protect our freedom, many take advantage of that freedom by grilling or cooking outside on Memorial Day weekend.

“(It’s the) kickoff for the summer,” says Darrell Copeland, a butcher at Harps grocery in Airport Drive, Missouri.

It’s fun in the sun.

“I like to smoke meats and stuff. It’s relaxing to me. I drive trucks. So to come home and just be able to kick back and not stress about things. It’s a slow process,” says Charles Harris.

Joe Potter says, “People around me, ‘Oh, what are you cooking over there?’ I say, well, bring the fork over. We’ll have it after a while!”

Lets stick to the basics when it comes to meat.

“Hamburger is the number one seller. But of course, grilling steaks start moving now, where they haven’t all winter long,” says Copeland.

There’s also pork.

And unless you want to be grilled by police for shoplifting, you need to pay for the meat.

According to the USDA, the cost of pork has increased by about 20 cents. Beef is now about $5.50 a pound, a 46 cent increase since January. On the flip side, poultry prices are slightly lower.

“If you’re hungry, you’re hungry. You don’t care (about the costs) when you go in,” says Potter.

“We have two growing girls. So we have to be wise with our money,” says Harris.

So regardless of some beefed-up prices, or whether you moo-ve from steak to pork or chicken, bon appetit!

“I like brats. So I’m going to cook brats,” says Copeland.

About half of the shoppers we talked with said prices affect their decision to buy meat for grilling.
