Gorillas win Vegas opener
Maya Williams posted a double-double Monday
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:
The Pittsburg State University women’s basketball team overcame a four-point deficit to outscore Embry-Riddle University, 29-12, down the stretch to claim a 72-59 win at the Las Vegas Hoopla Monday (Dec. 17).
The Gorillas (7-1) trailed 47-43 before pulling away from the Eagles (6-3) in the fourth quarter.
Athena Alavarado scored a game-high 20 points on nine of 14 shooting to lead Pitt State. She added nine rebounds. Maya Williams posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Shelby Lopez also scored in double figures with 13 points.
The Gorillas shot 56 percent from the field in the game, knocking down 28 of 50 attempts overall. Pitt State’s hot shooting helped the squad overcome 18 turnovers in the contest. The Gorillas also owned a 40-28 advantage in the rebounding department.
Embry-Riddle got a team-leading 19 points from Sarah Jones. Nikki Tucker (16) and Sigrid Sandstrom (11) also scored in double figures for the Eagles.
Pitt State will wrap up action in the Las Vegas Hoopla when the Gorillas face off against St. Edward’s University at 8 p.m. (CST) Tuesday (Dec. 18).
