Gorillas win MIAA opener
Pitt State tops SBU 9-6
PITTSBURG, Kan. — RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:
The Pittsburg State University baseball team jumped out to a 6-0 lead en route to a 9-6 victory over Southwest Baptist University in the MIAA opener for both teams Friday (Feb. 22) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas (6-4, 1-0 MIAA) scored three runs apiece in the third and fourth innings to stake starter Brad Kinsey to a lead. Reece Garvie smacked a two-run home run – his second round tripper of the season – as part of Pitt State’s three-run fourth inning.
Kinsey (2-0) scattered five hits and allowed one run in five innings of work. He walked five Bearcats and fanned five batters.
Marc Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while John Oliver also drove in two runs. Garvie and Gonzalez each scored two runs.
Tanner Lane registered his first save of the season by recording the final six outs against SBU (5-5, 0-1 MIAA). He entered the game with the bases loaded and no one out in the eighth inning. Lane allowed one hit and a walk over the final two innings.
The Gorillas and Bearcats will resume their three-game series with a 3 p.m. (CST) game Saturday (Feb. 23).
