Gorillas top Bethel for 9th straight win

RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:

Athena Alvarado and Tristan Gegg scored 14 points apiece and the Pittsburg State University women’s basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 72-47 victory over Bethel College Monday (Dec. 31) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.

The Gorillas (10-1) led just 27-19 after a sluggish first half against the NAIA member Threshers.

Pitt State shot 50 percent (8-16) in the third quarter and 62.5 percent in the final stanza (10-16) to finally put the game out of reach.

Gegg made three 3-pointers among her 14 points. Alvarado added four steals to go along with her 14 points. The Gorillas made 14 steals in the game while forcing the Threshers into 27 turnovers in the contest.

Shelby Lopez also finished in double figures with 10 points, while Megan Scott chipped in with nine points.

Bethel got 12 points apiece from Abby Schmidt, Karlie Schroeder and Kendall Michalski.

Pitt State will return to MIAA action Thursday (Jan. 3) when the Gorillas travel to Jefferson City, Mo., to face Lincoln University.
