RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University volleyball team will make its 2018 season debut Friday and Saturday (Aug. 24-25) when the Gorillas travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take part in the Christian Brothers University Invitational.

Pitt State will face Kentucky Wesleyan College at 11:30 a.m. and the University of Arkansas-Monticello at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The Gorillas then will meet Maryville University at 11:30 a.m. and the host school, Christian Brothers, at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Scouting the Gorillas
Third-year head coach Jen Gomez returns five players who started 20 or more matches in 2017.

Senior rightside hitter Lauren Regier compiled 307 kills (2.77 kps) and 70 total blocks in 2017, while senior middle blocker Taylor Unke contributed 114 kills (1.12 kps) and 91 total blocks (0.89 bps) last year. Regier earned honorable mention All-MIAA honors a year ago.

Sophomore setter Camryn Blanton tallied 456 assists (6.42 aps) as well as 209 total digs (2.94 dps) in 2017.

Scouting the Opposition
Kentucky Wesleyan returns 14 players from a squad that posted a 14-19 record last year. Senior defensive specialist Hannah Pierce led the Panthers defense with 3.10 digs per set.

UAM logged a 10-22 record in 2017 and the Cotton Blossoms welcome back eight players from that squad. Sophomore setter Toryn Cox led the team with 734 assists last year.

MU returns 10 players from a squad that posted a 3-29 overall record in 2017. Junior outside hitter Allison Lakin made 328 kills.

CBU went 15-18 in 2017 including a a hard-fought 3-2 win over Pitt State last September. Junior outside hitter Emma Lenoir tallied 421 kills a year ago to pace the Buccaneers.

Following the CBU Invitational, Pitt State will return to John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court to host the Pitt State Volleyball Classic Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
