Gorillas Sweep Lions In Non-Conference Twinbill

Press Release PSU:
The Pittsburg State University softball team swept a pair of non-conference games against Missouri Southern State University Saturday (Mar. 7) at the PSU Softball Complex. The Gorillas defeated the Lions, 6-0 and 8-6, and the contests count toward the State Farm Trophy Series between the two schools.

In game one, freshman pitcher Emmie Robertson (4-2) allowed just one hit – a leadoff single by Kathryn Goins in the second inning – while registering a season-high 11 strikeouts in the complete-game win.

The Gorillas scored two in the first, two in the third and single runs in the fourth and fifth frames. Nicole Nease had an RBI double in the first and Alex Perez belted a two-run home run in the third. Lawren McKinney also went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the game.

Robertson retired the final 14 batters she faced, after hitting MSSU’s Ali Corbett with one out in the third inning.

In game two, the Gorillas (7-3) rallied from a 5-0 first inning deficit to claim an 8-6 win over the Lions (1-9).

Zoe Price (3-0) overcame a rough start, allowing five runs (four earned) in the opening frame, before settling down and going the distance. She scattered 11 hits and registered eight strikeouts in the contest.

Pitt State scored three runs in its half of the first inning to trim MSSU’s margin and the Gorillas pushed in front thanks to a five-run third inning. Ashton Pratt and Cheslyn Mitchell had back-to-back RBI triples against the Lions’ Shelby Mitchell (0-1) in the big third inning. Pratt finished the game 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBi, while McKenzie Rynard went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
