RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:

The Pittsburg State University men’s basketball team was picked fifth in the 2019-20 MIAA Preseason Media Poll and eighth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll released today (Oct. 9).

The Gorillas received 183 points in the media poll to place behind preseason MIAA favorite Northwest Missouri, Missouri Southern, Washburn and Fort Hays State

The Bearcats, the defending MAA Champion, received 19 first place votes and 279 points in the media poll. MSSU received one first place vote and 259 points to earn the No. 2 spot. WU (238) and FHSU (198) finished third and fourth, respectively.

In the coaches poll, Pitt State received 92 points to finish eighth. NWMSU was the unanimous No. 1 in the poll with 13 first place votes and 169 points. MSSU gained one first place vote and 157 points to land at No. 2. WU (131), FHSU (124) and Northeastern State (99) rounded out the top five spots.

The Gorillas return one starter and eight letterwinners from a 2018-19 squad that posted a 17-13 overall record (9-10 MIAA).

Senior forward Christian Edmondson averaged a 6.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Senior guard A.J. Walker, who will rejoin the squad following the first semester’s action, contributed 7.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game a year ago.

Head coach Kim Anderson enters his third year leading leading Pitt State. He has a 335-188 (.641) career record as a collegiate head coach and a 34-26 mark directing the Gorillas.
