Gorillas Lose Two to No. 18 Arkansas Tech

Pittsburg State Softball evened its record and 3-3 on the season with losses in both games of a doubleheader at No. 18 Arkansas Tech on Thursday (Feb. 19). The Gorillas lost game one, 2-1 and game two, 13-5, in six innings.

The Gorillas scored first in the top of the second in game one. With one out, Alex perez knocked a base hit through the left side. Catie Cummins was hit by a pitch. Devon McCreath hit an infield single to load the bases. Katy Remy lined out two second for the second out of the inning, but an error allowed Perez to score from third.

A leadoff home run by Arkansas Tech’s Ashley Savage in the bottom of the fifth tied the game.

The Golden Suns’ go ahead run scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth.

Pitt State out hit Arkansas Tech 8-5 in the game. The Golden Suns also had three errors to the Gorillas one, but PSU left 11 runners on base.

Emmie Robertson took the loss in the circle, moving her record to 2-2 on the season. She struck out three batters and did not allow a walk.

In game two, the Gorillas scored first. Ashton Pratt led off the game with a base hit. Cheslyn Mitchell was hit by a pitch. McKenzie Rynard grounded into a double play, but three consecutive walks brought home a run.

The Pitt State lead was short lived though as the Golden Suns used three hits, an error, two walks and a hit batter to put up seven runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Back-to-back doubles, a walk and a base hit added to more runs for Arkansas Tech in the second.

Pitt State began working on a comeback in the top of the third. Nicole Nease doubled down the left field line. Perez and Cummins walked to load the bases. McCreath reached on a fielding error that left all runners safe and scored Nease and Perez. One batter later, a RBI ground out by Pratt scored Cummins to make the score 9-4.

The Gorillas scored their final run in the top of the fifth. With two outs and Pratt on second, Mitchell drove a double down the left field line, making the score 9-5 in favor of the home team.

Arkansas Tech added three runs on five hits and two Gorilla errors in the bottom of the fifth to go up 12-5.

A solo home run by Kambri Hill to lead off the bottom of the sixth ended the game by the eight-run rule.

Lynsey Conner started the game and pitched .2 innings in the loss in her first decision of the season. She gave up seven runs, only two of which were earned. She allowed three hits and two walks. Zoe Price finished the game, throwing 4.1 innings. She gave up six runs, three earned, on nine hits. She walked two and struck out three.

Arkansas Tech is now 6-0 on the season.

Pitt State begin MIAA play on Tuesday, April 24 at 2 p.m. against SouthwestBaptist at the PSU Softball Complex.
