Gorillas Head to 2015 MIAA Outdoor Championships

Press Release PSU:

The Pittsburg State University men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams will travel to St. Charles, Mo., May 1-3 to compete in the 2015 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships on the campus of Lindenwood University.

The three-day meet begins Friday (May 1) at 2 p.m. (CDT) with the start of the men’s decathlon competition at Lindenwood Track. The women’s heptathlon opens at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday’s action begins at 10 a.m., while Sunday competition begins at 11 a.m. Tickets are $5 per person, per day.

The Pitt State men enter the meet seeking their fourth straight MIAA outdoor title. The Gorillas rallied from a Sunday deficit with four final-day victories – by returners Jeff Piepenbrink (pole vault), Marquise Cushon (triple jump), Garrett Appier (shot put) and Andre Sanders (110m hurdles) – to eventually pull away for a 26.75 point victory over second place University of Nebraska-Kearney at Jefferson City, Mo., to earn the 2014 outdoor title. Pitt State edged UNK, 145-118.25.

The Pitt State women placed third overall at the 2014 MIAA Outdoor Championships. The Gorillas scored 93 points to finish behind Lincoln University (182) and the University of Central Missouri (104.5). Pitt State returns the 2014 MIAA high point scorer, Antqunita Reed, who earned MIAA titles in the long jump and triple jump and placed fourth in the 100 meters to score a meet-leading 25 points. Returner Jessica Macy also captured MIAA titles in both the 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter racing disciplines last year.

The Pitt State men also have captured the past two MIAA indoor titles (2014-15), meaning the Gorillas have garnered five of the MIAA’s last seven track & field championships since the start of the 2012 season.
