Gorilla Softball Loses Two to Northwest Missouri

PITTSBURG — The Pitt State softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Northwest Missouri, 3-2 and 4-2, on Friday (March 29) afternoon at the PSU Softball Complex.

In game one, the Gorillas outhit the Bearcats, 9-6, and led 2-0 up until the seventh inning, Four of the six Bearcats hits came in the seventh, helping them to the win.

Pitt State scored both of its runs in the third. With one out, Catie Cummins reached on an error by the Bearcat pitcher. She advanced to second on a base hit through the right side by Cheslyn Mitchell. A base hit by George and another Northwest error allowed both Cummins and Mitchell to score.

A Pitt State error with one out in the seventh followed immediately by a Kristen Uthe home run tied the game at 2-2. Three more hits scored the winning run.

Kyndel Shelburn struck out 11 batters in the loss. Only one of the runs she gave up was earned.

The Bearcats out hit Pitt State 10-4 in game two. Northwest scored first, putting up two runs on two hits in the top of the third.

The score would stay there until the bottom of the sixth. Tiffany Broen drew a leadoff walk to start the inning. Kreslee Ketcham reached on a Northwest error. Brown stole third to put herself 60 feet from a score. A one-out double by McKenzie Rynard scored both runners to tie the game at 2-2.

Northwest took the lead again in the top of the seventh with two runs on three hits for the 4-2 win.

Haleigh Sills started the game and pitched three innings, giving up two runs on six hits. Kylie Harpst came in in relief to start the fourth. She gave up two runs on four hits and took the loss to move to 3-2 on the season.

Pitt State is now 17-13 on the season and 5-5 in MIAA play. Northwest Missouri improves to 17-7 and 5-3 in the league.

The Gorillas take on No. 24 Missouri Western on Saturday (March 30) at noon. PSU’s Kids’ Day at the Ballpark begins at 11 a.m. with games, facepainting, an inflatable slide and snacks. An Easter Egg Hunt also begins at noon.
