Girard’s Troike signs to Pitt State football

Brecken Troike is an All-State LB for the Trojans.

GIRARD, Kan. – Girard High School senior Brecken Troike signed Friday afternoon to continue his football career at the college level.

Troike signed to play linebacker for the Pittsburg State Gorillas.

“It’s always been a big part of my life to try and play college football somewhere, and I’ve always wanted to play at Pitt State,” Troike says, “They have one of the best coaching staffs around, and I’m very thankful for the opportunity to play there.”

Troike is a 2X All-CNC selection for the Trojans. He was also a 1st team 3A All-State pick at linebacker for Girard last season – helping the team go 10-1 overall and win conference and regional championships.

“Coach Owens and coach Garman really persuaded me to get there,” Troike says of his decision to play at PSU, “Coach Owens (Pitt State LB coach) was a great linebacker at Montana State. I’ve heard he’s done really good things there, and Garman really knows his football.”

While the Gorilla coaching staff helped convince Troike to come to Pitt State – he had other voices helping him make his decision.

His high school head coach, Neal Philpot, is a former Pitt State All-American quarterback – and Troike’s grandpa is also a former Gorilla.

“That’s where my grandpa used to play, and I kind of just wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Troike says, “We always used to go to games together. He played cornerback there, so it’s kind of crazy to me,” Troike adds of Philpot, “We always talked about Pitt State and how I’ve always wanted to go there. I’m excited to go. I love the weight room, and I’m excited to get started.”
