I-44 gas tanker truck crash and burn, major delays I-44 E in Springfield

MoDOT state the crash closed down all eastbound lanes immediately at 5:11 a.m.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Reports Tuesday morning just after 5 a.m. of a crash on I-44 east, halting traffic as a gas tanker crashed and then caught fire.

Eastbound I-44 at West Bypass is shut down and eastbound traffic will be diverted down Chestnut Expressway because of an accident involving a gas tanker truck that is now on fire,” Springfield Police report.

  • The interstate eastbound is closed for a 3 mile portion from exit 72-75.
  • Traffic eastbound diverts from I-44 at exit 72, then east to Kansas Expressway.

The crash was reported at 5:11 a.m.

Authorities say the tanker driver has minor injuries.

The crash was located just a few miles from the airport. Authorities say the Springfield-Branson Regional Airport Fire Dept also assisted in putting out the fire.


Work continued until well after noon on September 20, 2022. Tanker still lays roadside as emergency vehicles block Exit 75 eastbound I-44.
