Gary R Haddock

Garrett (Gary) R Haddock, age 74 of Columbus, KS., passed away at 5:30 am on Monday, April 5, 2021 at Good Samaritan Facility in Hospice care in Olathe, KS. Gary was born on November 13, 1946 to Lavern and Adele (Schallert) Haddock in Pierce City, MO. He graduated from Pierce City High School in 1964 and went on to graduate from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS., with a Masters degree. He served in the US Army from May 1970 through December 1971 and was in Vietnam from January, 1971 through December, 1971 as a SP4. He received The Bronze Star while serving in Vietnam.
He began his teaching career in Columbus,KS., at CUHS as the art instructor from 1972 to 1989. He then taught art at Central Junior High, Columbus, from 1989-1990. From 1990-2001 he was the middle school counselor at Central. During his career in Columbus he was assistant Freshman football coach, assistant High School wrestling coach and High School tennis coach. During his time at Central Junior High he was the head coach for 7th and 8th grade football and also head coach for junior high wrestling. After retiring from the Columbus school system he went to work at Baxter Springs, KS, as the middle school counselor from August 2001 until January 2009. Gary loved teaching and coaching and enjoyed watching his students and athletes grow and learn.
Gary and Debe Kapple were married May 28, 1976 in Columbus, KS., after a two week courtship. They have resided in Columbus their married life and raised two children together.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Rick Grant and brothers-in-law, Tom Mooney and Mike Kapple. He is survived by his wife, Debe, of the home, daughter Jill Haddock Grant, Columbus, KS, , son and bonus daughter, Zach and Megan Haddock, Olathe, KS., grandsons Zane Grant and Tanner Grant, Columbus, Ks., Garrett Haddock and Charlie Haddock, Olathe, KS., sister, Barbara Haddock Mooney, Houston, TX., brother Don (Linda) Haddock, Franklin, IN., sister-in-law, Fonda Kapple, Greenville, TX and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
To remember Gary and his loving and kind heart, the family wishes donations be made to the Dream Big Little One Foundation in lieu of flowers. Donations can be mailed to Dream Big Little One, 7054 Northeast 80th, Weir, KS 6681. This foundation provides beds and bedding for children in need and Gary loved helping all the children as a teacher and counselor.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 am, Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the service time on Saturday May 8, 2021 at the funeral home.
