Gardeners offer tips on best produce to plant now
Kathy Flora hit the ground running on Wednesday.
“I wanted to get outside, and I did! I got out here and planted over 200 onions, and then had a meeting in town, so I rushed in, got ready, went to that, and now I’m back out here.”
Planting for the rest of the day.
“This is the first day I’ve gotten my hands in the dirt, so I’m ready to go,” she said.
Flora cultivates a variety of produce in Pittsburg, much of which she sells at the farmers market. She’s a seasoned pro when it comes to planting the right produce at the right time.
She chose to start her planting season with onions, a vegetable Julie Vanbecelaere says is a good pick, along with some others.
“Lettuce, carrots, kale, parsley, lots of different seeds you can go ahead and get started in the ground,” said VanBecelaere.
She adds that cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli, also good to plant now.
As for your flowers, it’s time for pansies.
“Other choices are snapdragons, dianthus, even petunias, as long as their acclimated to the cool weather.”
One last tip: don’t rush. Vanbecelaer has seen many of her customers put plants outside, such as tomatoes and peppers, when its still too cold.
This is something Flora has learned over the years.
“We found that we’re much more ahead by waiting. We may not have things quite as soon, but the quality and the amount of produce is greatly increased by plants that aren’t stressed by a late frost.”
But frost was not on Flora’s mind here.
“It really is nice to be out. We got cabin fever!”
The good news: the day was great. The better news: spring is around the corner.
Flora will sell her produce starting next month at the Pittsburg Farmers Market.
