Galena returns to state tournament for third straight season

The Bulldogs play in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday

GALENA, Ks. – Galena makes the trip to the state tournament in Hutchinson this week for the third straight season. The Bulldogs finished as the runners up last year.

“It’s been a goal ever since it ended where it did last year,” says Galena head coach Matt Meyr. “We knew we had a good group coming back. It was our goal to come out and win the conference again and we did. Then to win the sub state and we just got that done on Saturday night. Now we’re going back to state to take another shot at it.”

“We’ve been in a lot of big games over the last couple of years,” says Galena senior Brett Sarwinski. “I think that’s really going to help us get the nerves out. We are familiar with the type of basketball that is played up there. We have to be ready for every battle that we have. ”

Many of the teams returning also have experience in the late stages of the season.

“It’s going to be tough,” Meyr says. “I think five of the eight teams that were out there last year are back again including the team that beat us last year in Hesston. Thomas More Prep, who we play in the first round, was a final four team last year.”

The Bulldogs have built a solid resume this season. They are 22-1 heading in to the state tournament. They’re coming off a 65-39 win over Columbus in the sub state championship this past weekend.

“This group is as good of friends off the court that they are on the court,” Meyr says. “Good team chemistry is really the key to why this team succeeds.”

“We have guys that want each other to succeed and that just helps you do great things on the court,” Sarwinski says.

Galena hits the floor against Thomas More Prep in the quarterfinal round. That game is set for Wednesday at 8:00 pm in Hutchinson.
