Galen Merle Culver
June 29, 1928 - June 24, 2022
Mr. Galen Merle Culver passed away on Friday evening, June 24, 2022, at the age of 93 (just a few days shy of his 94th birthday). Galen was born on June 29th, 1928, to Roy and Leila Culver. He met his future wife Freda Wilkerson in Galena, Kansas, and the two were married in 1948.
Galen was drafted in January 1952 into the US Army during the Korean War and was stationed overseas in Okinawa as part of a mortar team. It was during this time that his first daughter, Connie was born. After returning to the States in December 1953, Galen and Freda had their second daughter, Diane, as well as their second son Donald (their first son Stanley having been stillborn).
Galen and Freda purchased a farm and he became a lifelong farmer; Galen also went to work at the B.F. Goodrich tire plant in Miami, Oklahoma, in the Quality Control Department. Galen would work the family farm on evenings and weekends, and he worked full-time for over 30 years at the tire plant until it closed in 1986.
Galen loved horses, having had a few during his lifetime, and he also loved farming with his John Deere tractors and farm implements. In their later years together Galen and Freda would go round dancing together.
Soft-spoken and gentle, Galen will be remembered for his remarkable kindness and willingness to help anyone out in their time of need. He greatly enjoyed spending family time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Galen was proceeded in death by his parents Roy and Leila Culver, his wife Freda Culver, his sons Stanley and Donald Culver, his daughter Connie White, and his two sisters Helen Phillips and Ruth Coleman.
Galen is survived by his daughter Diane Hartman and son-in-law Matt Hartman of Joplin Missouri, his grandchildren Justin Townsend of Centerton, Arkansas; Adriane Townsend of Webb City, Missouri; Desiree Muir of Clever, Missouri; Denver Muir of Springfield, Missouri; Eric Golden and his wife Aimee Golden of Carl Junction, Missouri; Lisa Fogg of Carl Junction, Missouri, and Teresa Barrett and her husband Kyle Barrett of Webb City, Missouri. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am, Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Rev Dorcia Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena, KS.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 pm, Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer Association in care of the funeral home.
