Frontenac preps for 2019 with experienced roster
The Raiders have 16 seniors on this year's team
FRONTENAC, Kan. — The Frontenac Raiders are on the field this week for their first week of football practice.
Frontenac finished last season with a 6-4 overall record and won a playoff game for the fifth consecutive year.
This Raiders have plenty of experience returning from last season, including two guys in quarterback Jake Beckmann and linebacker Drew Bollinger that were named honorable mention All-State last year.
In all, Frontenac has 16 seniors on this year’s roster.
“We have a lot coming back,” says head coach Mark Smith, who is 53-23 in six seasons as the head coach at Frontenac, “We had a lot of injuries last year, but it got a lot of those young guys experience and varsity time to get ready for this year. Their confidence will be better.”
“Last year we just had a bit of an off season,” says senior Alex Johnson, “Having a lot of returning starters, plus having experience for most of those guys, I think we’ve been able to build on some stuff and really figure it out.”
“We’re playing with a little chip on our shoulder,” Smith adds, “We didn’t have a great year last year, so we have a lot to prove. I think our kids are ready to show that.”
There’s a lot to be excited about for the Raiders, but they still have a tough schedule ahead of them in 2019.
“We think we have a chance to be pretty good, but we know how good our schedule is,” Smith continues, “We have a good non-conference schedule and a few teams out of state. We know Colgan is going to be good, and then our district is very tough with Galena, Parsons, Caney, Columbus and Baxter. We want to be playing our best ball by week four against Galena. We know that preps us for the playoffs and hopefully we can get there and make a push for November.”
