Former Pittsburg standout Elkamil commits to Tulsa

Gavyn Elkamil averaged 24 points and 12 rebounds his senior year for the Purple Dragons.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Former Pittsburg High School standout Gavyn Elkamil has made his college decision.

Elkamil announced on Monday afternoon that he has committed to play for Division I Tulsa.

“They really made me a priority,” Elkamil says of the program, “They showed me continuous love and their style of play fits me well. I love the coaching staff and it’s a plus that it’s close to home.”

Elkamil had a monster senior year for the Purple Dragons last winter. He posted 24.6 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, while also dishing out 3.8 assists per game. He also had 2 steals per contest.

After he finishes his one year at Link Year Prep this winter, he’ll be headed to take his shot at the Division I level.

“I just want to get better and work as hard as I can,” Elkamil says of his goals at Tulsa, “I would love to start as a freshman. I know it’s not going to be a walk in the park, but I’m ready for the challenge. I also want to put Pittsburg basketball on the map. We have some hoopers coming up and I just want to show them that no matter where you’re from, if you put in the work, you can do anything. I always have something to prove no matter where I’m at. I’m ready to prove a lot of people wrong.”

Elkamil was named a unanimous 1st team All-SEK selection and was a finalist for the “Sports in Kansas” Player of the Year as a senior.
