Kate Kelley sits down with Crystal Redden and Kathy Lorde to discuss Hero Bags, their way of giving back to local veterans who are know in nursing and assisted living homes.

Hero bags are filled with books, games, and snacks and are given to veterans who may not get many visitors.  Crystal sees it as a way of giving back to the neglected veterans and is a simple way to show people care.

It's also a way to build a connection with theses veterans and show they have a friend.  The connection goes beyond the act of giving with the VFW inviting the veterans to dinners and other events.

Crystal wanted to volunteer for the program because her husband is a veteran as well as the commander of Post 534, so the cause has always been close to her heart.  Kathy's husband is also in the military and echoed the same sentiments.

If you're interested in donating your time, money, or materials, you can visit VFW Post 534 at 110 E. Veterans Way, Joplin, MO.
