Fatal crash due to weather on U54 claims life of Yates Center man

WOODSON COUNTY, Kan. – Authorities say weather played a role in a fatal crash in southeast Kansas.

The crash happened on Feb. 12, 2020, around 7:55 a.m. on U54, about two miles east of Yates Center.

An express van was driving west on the highway, lost control due to weather and hit a Dodge pickup that was traveling east. That’s according to the Kansas State Highway Patrol’s crash report.

The driver of the express van, Jeffrey A. Frericks, 52, of Marshalltown, Iowa was taken to the hospital with a “suspected serious injury.”

The driver of the pickup, Robert E. Cochran, 58, of Yates Center, died at the scene.
