Ernte-Fest goes on as planned for 2021

FREISTATT, Mo. – The Lions Club Ernte-Fest will go on as scheduled. The festival is in its 47th year celebrating the German heritage of the town of Freistatt, Missouri.

It features a beer garden, polka and bratwurst.

Bob Dieckhoff, the Lions Club President, says, “I think it’s just getting together, you know, socialization, and some people like all the variety of beers we have so we have a beer garden.”

This year’s event happens on August 21, 2021, from 4:00 pm to midnight.

Introduction to Ernte-Fest

In 1974, the Ernte-Fest was a vision of the charter members of the Freistatt Lions Club. The club was chartered in June, and by August the first Ernte-Fest had become a reality. Held in the middle of the quiet little German town of Freistatt, MO, it was small back then but the theme which is referred to as the “Harvest Festival”, was the same then as it is today. Since then it’s been enjoyed by many folks from the surrounding communities as well as people from afar – even from Alaska and Germany. It had a small beer garden in the beginning and a genuine polka band just like today. Word got around, and the festival gained in popularity over the years and has had as many as 10,000 visitors on Saturday night.

All for a Good Cause

The Ernte-Fest is the Freistatt Lions Club’s main fund raiser to be able to contribute to the many Lions programs, as well as take care of the needs of the less fortunate in the community and surrounding area. Indeed, since 1974 the Freistatt Lions Club has donated $500,000 from this event to various Lions International sight and hearing programs as well as the club’s local charity projects.
