Economic Development Corporation Announces Recognition Award Winners

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan – The Cherokee County Economic Development Corporation is pleased to announce our 2020 Recognition Award winners. These awards which have been presented annually since 2017 recognize local businesses and organizations for their contributions to the county.

TAMKO Building Products is the recipient of the 2020 Business Growth Award which honors a Cherokee County business that has experienced significant growth. TAMKO has had a manufacturing facility in Columbus for many years and recently relocated their corporate headquarters to Galena. This addition increased their already sizable economic impact on the county.

The 2020 Rising Star Award recipient is Decades of Wheels. The Rising Star Award acknowledges a promising young business in Cherokee County. In early 2018, Decades of Wheels purchased much of the west side of the 1100 block of Military Avenue/Kansas Route 66 in downtown Baxter Springs. Since then, they have transformed the properties into a set of attractions including: a car museum, bistro & sweet shop, arcade, bed & breakfast, and event center.

The Cherokee County Health Department is the recipient of the 2020 Community Impact Award which recognizes a business or organization that has positively influenced the quality of life in Cherokee County. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Health Department has worked tirelessly to protect citizens’ health and ensure the public has critical information. While the current crisis has heightened our awareness of the important work they do, the Health Department has been engaged in protecting and improving health in the county for years. Their dedication, compassion and professionalism benefits all of us.

The 2020 Hall of Fame Award recipient is American Bank. The Hall of Fame Award recognizes a business that has provided years of unselfish service to Cherokee County. American Bank has provided banking services in Cherokee County for more than 100 years and has locations in Baxter Springs, Columbus, and Galena. In addition to the financial services they offer individuals and businesses, American Bank is very involved in the local community. They provide financial support to causes of all types and bank staff are active in many local organizations.
