Downstream Casino reopens after COVID-19 closure

Downstream Casino Resort starts phased reopening

QUAPAW, Okla. – The sounds of slot machines are officially back at Downstream Casino.

“We think we’re good and ready, and I’m really excited to see everybody back today,” says Downstream Casino Resort General Manager Janio Cummings.

That excitement is shared by Dustin Heritage, who was able to come back to work after being furloughed for two months.

“It feels fantastic. We’re a big family here. We like to have fun. Work hard, play hard. So it’s good to be back,” says Heritage.

Residents from all over the four-states came to the grand re-opening at 10 am, ready to get back after the casino was closed for two months.

“Yeah, it’s pretty exciting. This is her birthday so you know it’s kind of a nice coincidence that her birthday came up on the same day the casino reopened,” says Joplin resident David Casedeer.

The casino is doing a lot to make sure those people are as safe as possible. From checking temperatures at the door to providing hand sanitizer and giving out masks, limiting the number of machines and tables that can be used, and limiting the number of restaurants that are open.

“We’re looking forward to getting back to whatever the new normal’s gonna be. But we’re also gonna be very careful about the health and safety of our employees, number one and also our guests. It’s very important to us that people feel safe, feel protected, and that we listen to their concerns and we try to follow through,” says Quapaw Tribal Chairman John Berrey.

The reopening marks the first phase of the casino’s reopening plan. As the casino moves to phases two and three, more things will come back, including employees.

“We just don’t know when that will be. We want to see how phase one goes. Hopefully there won’t be any major spikes. We also have a contingency plan to shut back down if necessary. We’re just trying to take it a little bit at a time. One step, one bite at a time.”
