Donation replaces archery equipment lost in arson fire in Liberal
LIBERAL, Mo. — Liberal, Missouri student archers have some new gear after losing equipment in an arson fire.
The fire at the old High School and gymnasium happened on September 22nd, 2019. Firefighters and law enforcement arrived at the scene to find them fully engulfed in flames.
Liberal Archery Head Coach Stacey Reed says archery equipment was among the items destroyed in the fire. The Liberal R-2 School District has an archery team in the ‘Missouri National Archery In the Schools Program’ (MONASP).
Reed says the team had purchased the equipment earlier this year with the help of a grant from the Missouri Department of Conservation. She says they had only about four weeks with the new equipment before it was lost in the fire.
But the Missouri Department of Conservation wasn’t going to let the kids go without. On November 6th, they donated five targets, 12 new bows, two boxes of arrows, a bow rack and a repair kit.
Prosecutors have charged two people with several arson fires in Liberal, including the one at the old High School and gymnasium.
