Crawford County election deadline to run for office and party affiliation change deadline changed to June 1st
A state law passed in 2014 makes June 1 the deadline for making changes to your party affiliation in years that have a primary election. Only the Republican and Democratic parties have primaries scheduled for August 4, 2020. The other parties recognized by the State of Kansas do not have primary elections scheduled. These rules for party affiliation at the primary election are adopted by each of the political parties.
At the primary election, only registered voters that are affiliated with one of the two largest political parties will be allowed to vote a ballot for the party that they are affiliated with. Voters that are not affiliated with any party can still vote in the primary election, but they will be required to sign a form affiliating them with that party prior to voting. Voters that become members of a political party for the primary election can change their party status again, if they wish, after the primary election results are certified by the state on August 31.
This is a summary of the major points of the party affiliation law:
· Registered voters who are affiliated with a party may not file paperwork to change their party affiliations from June 1 through August.
· Any person who files paperwork to change parties during the prohibited period will be asked to re-file the document September 1 or after.
· Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians may not switch party affiliations during this period.
· A member of a party may not disaffiliate from his/her party and become unaffiliated during this period.
· A registered voter who is unaffiliated may, however, affiliate with a party during this period and when voting at the primary or when requesting an advance ballot.
