Coweta Charlene Ulrey of Quapaw, OK passed from this life Friday, January 22, 2021 at Parkview Height Care Center in Garnett, KS. She was 94.
Coweta was born May 31, 1926 in Peoria, OK to Charles Gates and Lottie (Nonkesis) Dawes. She was a graduate of Quapaw High School in 1944 and she served in the Civilian Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. She had lived in the Quapaw area most of her life and was a member of the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma.
Coweta trained at St. John’s Hospital in Joplin, MO as a nusrs and worked at Baxter Springs Memorial Hospital in Baxter Springs, KS. She was a member of Spring River Indian Baptist Church southeast of Quapaw, OK, the Order of the Eastern Star in Quapaw and Miami where she had served as Worthy Matron several times, the Spring River Extension Homemakers, Quapaw Booster Club, D.O.C. Advisory Committee and had been a precinct worker for the election board in Quapaw.
Coweta was preceded in death by her husband John Ulrey, her parents, 2 brothers, Charles Dawes and Willis Dixon and 7 sisters, Cecil Burkybile, Juanita Kay, Patricia Scott, Oleta Ballard, Mendota Scott, Lula Belle Soper and Reberta Kyser.
Coweta is survived by 1 son, Winston “Cap” Ulrey and his wife Laraine of Quapaw, OK, 2 daughters, Debra Jane Hudgens and her husband Bim of Belton, TX and Jonnie Gayle Cornwell and her husband Michael of Ottawa, KS, 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held. A memorial dinner will be held at a later date. Family and friends may pay their respects Monday, January 25 from 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. and Tuesday, January 26 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, OK. Memorials are suggested to Shriner’s Hospitals in care of the funeral home. Services have been placed in the care of Paul Thomas Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Miami, OK.
