Congresswoman Jenkins on Protecting the Families of Fallen Soldiers

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (KS-02) released the following statement after the House passed H.J. Res 91, Honoring the Families of Fallen Soldiers Act, today. This afternoon, President Obama ordered officials to resume paying death benefits to the families of fallen soldiers.

“Our nation lost five brave heroes this past weekend, including Sergeant Patrick Hawkins, whose family lives in Lansing, Kan. Patrick was a talented Army Ranger who was tending to a wounded soldier when he was killed, because he made a promise to never leave a man behind. I believe it is our responsibility to honor Patrick and the others who gave their lives protecting this nation by not leaving their families behind.

“The Pay Our Military Act was passed to prevent a government shutdown from negatively impacting access to death benefits for the families of fallen soldiers. I am deeply concerned the administration would withhold assistance from these families during this tragic time, and pleased to hear President Obama ordered these benefits to resume being paid today. We absolutely cannot allow these patriots and their loved ones, who have given so much, to be used as political pawns.”
