Columbus volleyball aims for first sub-state win since 2000

The Titans face Baxter Springs in the first-round of sub-state Saturday.

COLUMBUS, Kan. – The Columbus Titans will hit the court on Saturday in the first round of the 3A sub-state tournament in Baxter Springs.

This Titans group has already taken a big step forward this fall – winning 12 games this year after winning just one all of last season. It’s the first time they’ve won more than 10 games since 2010.

When they hit the court against Baxter Springs Saturday, they’ll have a chance to make more history. A win against the Lions in the first round of sub-state would be the team’s first sub-state win since 2000 – and just their second sub-state win in program history.

“We are really motivated,” says junior Aubree Saporito, “Hopefully we have a big student section coming and a big crowd to come and support us.”

“We’re super motivated and we’re so excited,” says junior Faith Henry, “We really hope we can come out and win for the seniors and for everyone, and really start that fire for next year as well. We want to show that Columbus volleyball can do hard things, and we can do this.”

“Everyone is energetic and excited to be here and excited to win,” adds senior Lily Mooney, “I don’t think we’ve ever won sub-state. We have a pretty good seeding. We’re ready to go out there and win our first game and just keep winning.”

“Normally we have success in softball and basketball and stuff like that, but it’s never really been volleyball,” Saporito finishes, “It feels pretty good to us to finally have some success in volleyball.”
