Colgan volleyball preps for home opener with eyes on return to state
The Panthers are ranked #2 in the state heading into this season.
PITTSBURG, Kan. – The St. Mary’s Colgan volleyball team will play their home opener on Thursday night, hosting an interstate showdown against the Carthage Tigers.
Colgan is 2-0 to start the season after beating Humboldt and Jayhawk-Linn on Tuesday.
The Panthers were 42-4 last season, going undefeated in the league and winning a sub-state title. They return their leaders in kills, assists, blocks and digs from the 2019 season.
The team obviously has high expectations for this year. On top of that, they got bounced from the state tournament after day one last year, so they’re also motivated to get back to state and make it right.
“We have a target on our backs,” says senior Millie Stockard, “I think it’s really good to be pressured. It makes us work a lot harder.”
“We didn’t sleep well after we lost last year,” adds head coach Cathy Oplotnik, “We had three very long matches at state and it could have gone either way. I think our goal is to get back there if we can and see how well we can do.”
