Colgan softball claims back-to-back 2A state championships
The Panthers top Burlingame 6-0 in the state championship Friday in Pratt.
PRATT, Kan. – The Colgan Panthers are state softball champions once again.
“It feels great,” says head coach Annie Dellasega, “I told the girls before the championship game that all those 6 AM practices I made them get up for…this is what those were for. This tournament was a business trip from the beginning. This whole season was awesome.”
The Panthers beat Burlingame 6-0 on Friday afternoon in Pratt to claim their second straight 2A state championship. Colgan won the 2A title in 2019, before COVID-19 canceled the season in 2020.
Colgan got the scoring started with a 2-run single from Gabi Radell in the top of the 4th inning. Kaitlin Crossland hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 5th to push the lead to 4-0. Lauren Yaghmour added a run with an RBI single in the top of the 6th, before Crossland drove in Yaghmour for her 3rd RBI of the game.
Crossland was dominant for Colgan in the circle all tournament long, including throwing a complete game shutout in the championship game, allowing just three hits and racking up 10 strikeouts.
“I’m just so excited,” Crossland says, “It’s just such a great time with a great team that I love so much.”
“Players like Kaitlin don’t come around very often,” Dellasega says of her senior standout, “We’re going to miss her, and we’re going to miss all of our seniors. They worked so hard to make this happen.”
“I think all of us wanted to work even harder this time,” Crossland says of not getting a chance at state in 2020, “We didn’t get that chance last year, and for the seniors, this was our last chance to defend our title.”
