City of Joplin starts handing out masks to residents

Approximately 2500 masks handed out on first day.

JOPLIN, Mo. – An estimated 2500 cloth face masks were given to Joplin residents today as the city works to hand out 50-thousand.

Joplin Public Information Officer Lynn Onstot says the first day was a big success.

“We started this morning at 7. We had people here at 6:15,” says Onstot.

Distribution was set up drive-thru stile, where residents have to enter the Memorial Hall parking lot off of South Joplin Avenue — then follow a path of cones to get to one of three tents that are set up. They then show their sewer bill or driver’s license, say how many people are in their household — and get their masks.

“It’s a really fast process actually. I thought it was gonna take a little longer than what it did to get through the line. But it took less than five minutes to get through,” says Joplin Resident Jason Adams.

Masks were handed out at three different intervals — each being a couple of hours long. From 7 to 9 am, 11 am to 1 pm, and then 4 to 6 pm.

Some residents said that they weren’t happy about the cities mask mandate — but got a mask because they planned to follow it. But others really liked that the city was making sure that residents had at least one mask.

“Everybody is selling masks and things and it’s nice to be able to have an extra in case you need it, and they’re washable and everything. I think it’s great,” says Joplin Resident Judy Roach.

“I just actually wanna commend Joplin for actually handing out the masks. Cause a lot of people out there can’t afford them, I think that’s why a lot of people don’t have them,” adds Adams.

“We’re in the field of providing public health, just like we take care of public safety. We want to take care of our public and their health,” says Onstot.
