City of Joplin approves contract renewal for health department position
JOPLIN, Mo. — The City of Joplin also approves a contract renewal at the meeting.
Since 2002 the city has had a Regional Response Planner position which is partially funded by the State of Missouri. Health Department officials say the position was created following the September 11th terrorist attacks to help communities combat possible bio-terrorism. Since then, it’s evolved to providing other services to the region, including help coordinating efforts following the 2011 tornado.
Assistant Director of Health Ryan Talken says “This position basically it is our liaison between public health, hospitals, police, fire, and also other emergency response.”
The funding for the position is a 50/50 split between the City of Joplin Health Department and the Jasper County Health Department.
