Chilly Sunday lined up for us – Nick

A few AM showers possible while we keep an eye on other rain chances on the way

Good Saturday evening, everyone. As Doug advertised the other day, our Saturday got off to a freezing cold start before we warmed back up throughout the day. After seeing highs in the upper 40s on our Friday, we dropped back into the upper 20s in the Joplin area. Before cloud cover managed to start working back in during the afternoon, we were able to rebound after our cold start this morning. Joplin Regional topped out around 50° with outlying areas in the upper 40s and lower 50s this afternoon.

Let’s break down our weather setup. At the surface, we kept an eye on an area of rain that mainly worked across central and northern Missouri. While a few of those showers skirted a few areas around Stockton Lake and the Harry Truman Reservoir, there’s another area of rain riding along our advancing cold front coming out of Nebraska and across the state of Kansas. That’s the system on the way in as we get our Sunday started.

That system at the surface is being driven in by the upper-level low working across the Upper Midwest. Once that pushes the front through, it will move on and allow the jet stream to move back our way to bring a little mild spell our way.

The incoming front will allow overnight lows drop back near 40°, an improvement after our cold start this morning. With the front, we’ll continue with partly to mostly cloudy skies throughout the overnight and to start Sunday morning out. In addition, the front will bring the rain coming out of Nebraska into northern and central Missouri by the time we get closer to sunrise. Some of those showers still have a chance of clipping some parts of southwest Missouri north of I-44. That will be our only chance for showers for our Sunday.

Throughout the rest of the day, the departing upper-level wave and front will allow for mostly cloudy skies to start turning partly sunny across the area. With that and a lighter north breeze behind the front, we’ll actually see afternoon highs a touch warmer compared to what we saw today. We’ll push into the lower 50s to start Sunday afternoon out before we hit the middle 50s for the upcoming afternoon.

While skies will start turning partly sunny for the afternoon ahead, we’ll definitely see more clearing as we go into Sunday night and Monday morning. With mostly sunny skies, a returning jet upstairs and a returning southerly breeze at the surface, we’ll go from Monday morning lows near 40° to afternoon highs back in the middle 60s across the area.

Our Tuesday will be another mild day with highs pushing back into the lower 70s across the region. While we’ll keep dry for Tuesday, we’ll see partly sunny skies work back into the area ahead of another front and another upper-level wave coming in from the west.

That next wave will keep mostly cloudy skies in place for Wednesday and bring in a better chance for scattered rain. Based on how this setup is shaping up, we’ll have morning lows in the lower 60s and early highs in the middle 60s before temperatures start dropping throughout that afternoon.

Behind Wednesday’s system, we’ll stay dry for Thursday and Friday. With partly sunny skies Thursday, mostly cloudy skies Friday and the jet stream to our south for both days, it will be chilly with afternoon highs for both days in the lower 50s and morning lows in the middle to upper 30s. Sticking with Doug’s pattern, another wave will pass near the region as we head into Saturday. That will keep mostly cloudy skies in place with another chance for a few showers to pass through as highs will top out in the lower 60s.

Doug has you covered with his long range forecast out through December 11th down below. Have a good night and a great Sunday!

Next Friday and Saturday: Cool temperatures with showers on Saturday.

November 21st-27th: A chilly start but a nice midweek warm up into Thanksgiving.  Then we turn sharply colder by Black Friday.  Showers on Sunday, then rolling back in late Wednesday with thunderstorm chances on Thanksgiving.  Rain or possibly snow on Black Friday.

November 28th-December 4th: Mild for much of the week. We will trend cooler for Thursday and Saturday, though. We’ll watch for slight rain chances Tuesday and rain for Wednesday. Another system will bring t-storms our way for Friday and showers for Saturday.

December 5th-11th: Cool for Sunday before we turn colder for Monday. Chilly Wednesday before we turn mild for Thursday and Friday. Cool again by Saturday. We’ll have rain chances on Sunday. Dry for much of the week until rain chances return Friday and Saturday.
