Margaret Hollenshead celebrated her 109th birthday Wednesday.

Hollenshead lives at Country Place Senior Living in Chanute. They cannot allow visitors right now, due to the threat of the spread of COVID-19, so her friends and family lined up and drove through the parking lot to wish her happy birthday.”

“I think it’s good,” Hollenshead says of the celebration, “It’s fun!”

Hollenshead is a retired music teacher. She was born, and spent most of her life in southeast Kansas.

“She knows a lot of people,” says Shannon Tyler, Director of Country Place Senior Living, “A lot of our former employees have went through, and a lot of current employees. She’s made a lot of friends over the years. She’s a wonderful lady.”

Hollenshead is a woman of few words, even more so after receiving her drink of choice on her birthday; rum and coke.

“It’s always good,” Margaret says of her favorite drink.

“She’s just spunky and got a lot of spark. We love her. You never know what she’s going to say to you,” Tyler adds, “You can ask her a question, and she might just snap back at you witih something out of the blue. It just makes your day. It makes you smile and makes you laugh.”

As for seeing her friends and family on her special day?

“It means a lot,” Hollenshead finishes, “It means a lot because you’re being remembered by your friends.”
