Chanute warns residents of recent utility scam

CHANUTE, Kan. – The City of Chanute released information regarding a recent scam that involves utility bill payments.

According to the city, scammers target residents with a recorded message that states the resident has overpaid utility bills. The scammer’s message then instructs the listener to ‘press 1’ to get help with a refund.

Police say an operator will then ask for personal information and a credit card number in order to issue said refund

The city advises anyone who receives any calls regarding overpaid utility bills to hang up. If you overpaid on your utility bill the City of Chanute will show it as a credit on your next billing.
