Changes are coming to the VA Pension plan for veterans.
A workshop is being held next week to help veterans prepare for those changes.
Local veteran Dale Wark is already a part of the current VA Pension plan.
While he says it’s been helpful, that help, only goes so far.
Dale Wark, Veteran: “The people that run the system up in the hospital, in Mount Vernon, they’re all good people and they all try to help you, but it just doesn’t come back from the headquarters.”
The VA pension is designed to help wartime veterans, their spouses and dependents with medical expenses, among other things.
Christopher Dumm is a VA accredited attorney. He says some positive changes are coming to the VA pension.
Christopher Dumm, VA Accredited Attorney: “Now, we believe that claimants will be able to keep maybe more of their assets and income and still be eligible for this pension.”

Wark, is trying to be optimistic, but says his past experience, keeps him from looking too far on the bright side.
Wark: “The only reason that the VA will go and do anything or change anything is to wait for you to drop dead, if you drop dead, then they’ll go on and do something else.”
And for Dumm, he knows the new rules aren’t perfect.
Dumm: “The positive thing is we have more clarity on what the VA is going to look at in order to find someone eligible, the negative, would be, there’s now penalty periods that can be quite extreme if you violate some of the new rules.”
The rules are scheduled to go into effect October 18th.
Dumm encourages all veterans to ensure they’re up-to-date on the new rules.
His firm is holding a workshop next Thursday, October 4th at MSSU.
