Carthage man gets prison time for fatal DWI crash

JOPLIN, Mo. – A Jasper County judge sentences a man in a fatal drunk driving case to 17 years in prison.

James Schrader, of Carthage, pleaded guilty in February to DWI death of another and two counts of DWI serious physical injury.

The fatal crash happened in 2017 at Lone Elm Road and Murphy Boulevard in Joplin. Police say Schrader was driving a pickup that hit a car head-on. Four people were in the car. One of them, Nicole Sawyer, 27, of Webb City, died at the hospital the next day.

Judge Gayle Crane, today, July 21, 2020, sentenced Schrader to ten years for DWI death of another and seven years for each count of DWI serious physical injury (to run at the same time). Schrader will serve the ten year sentence first followed by the seven year sentence.
