Carthage girls knock off #5 Strafford
The Tigers beat the Indians 63-53 Tuesday night.
STRAFFORD, Mo. – The Carthage girls picked up a big road win Tuesday night, knocking off #5 Strafford 63-53.
“It’s a great team victory. The girls played composed on both ends of the floor,” says head coach Scott Moore, “Normally when we win, we beat teams with our athleticism and energy. I think we won this one with our brains and our composure on the floor.”
After leading 31-30 at halftime, the Tigers outscored Strafford 32-23 in the second half to top the 5th-ranked team in class 3.
“We went inside and scored more in the paint in the second half,” Moore adds, “Once they started to collapse, Hailey (Fullerton) got some looks outside and hit some crucial threes in the 4th quarter.”
Fullerton scored a team-high 18 points tonight, while Kianna Yates added 17. Katie Crowe was also in double figures with 11.
Tuesday night’s win was a nice win for Carthage, and not just because it was over a top-10 team in the state. It was a bounce-back win for the team after losing two of three in the Pink and White Holiday Tournament last week.
“We talked about that in practice, how we weren’t playing Lady Tiger basketball in all three of those games, even thought we won one,” Moore finishes, “We made that a focus to go back to playing how we were in the early part of the season, and I think we did that tonight. It proved to us that we have what it takes to compete with the good teams in the area.”
Carthage is now 9-5 on the season, and will be on the road against Joplin on Thursday night.
