Carl Junction schools push back against a statewide change in sports participation requirements
CARL JUNCTION, Mo. – The Missouri State High School Activities Association makes a temporary change to its by-laws for the upcoming school year: students who choose to learn from home during the pandemic can still participate in school sports — *if* their school permits it. But the athletic director for Carl Junction High School, Rich Neria says CJ schools won’t be changing their rules, and will not allow students who take all their classes at home to play school sports. “We don’t have all the hotspots. We don’t have all the numbers that everybody else is maybe dealing with. And so our rationale is, if they think it’s safe enough to play sports then we think they should be in school.” Neria says he doesn’t foresee any Carl Junction teams being unable to take the field because of student athletes choosing to learn completely from home.
