Candlelight prayer vigil planned for drowning victim, family
John D. Wheeler drowned Saturday in drainage ditch
JOPLIN, Mo — An investigation is ongoing, but authorities identified the teenager who drowned Saturday morning in a Joplin drainage ditch as 13 year John D. Wheeler.
The teen died after slipping into flash flood waters alongside 5th street and Murphy Boulevard. Wheeler was swept away with the current which carried him to north Murphy and the low water bridge.
That’s where Joplin police and Redings Mill fire and water rescue recovered the youth. Life saving measures were attempted. Wheeler was pronounced dead later at a local hospital.
A candlelight prayer vigil to honor Wheeler and his mother who survives will be held Wednesday, August 28th, at 8:00 pm in Cunningham Park at the basketball court. Participants are asked to bring candles.
We have been told John and his mother were new to the Joplin area but a group is hoping all will embrace her at this time of tragedy by attending the candlelight prayer vigil.
