Byers aims for 2-0 start to MMA career

Nate Byers won his debut back in May.

JOPLIN, Mo. – Carthage High School product Nathan Byers is aiming for a 2-0 start to his amateur MMA career.

Byers, who fights out of Victory Gym in Joplin, will be back in the cage on January 25th, fighting on the Pyramid vs. Walkout FC card in Rogers, Arkansas. The 18-year-old will be fighting Alex Gentry at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers.

Byers won his debut back in May, via 1st-round submission at Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburg.

After that, he headed off to National Guard basic training.

Byers finished up his duties in November. Now, he’s back and excited to return to the cage.

“I started (training) as soon as a got back home,” Byers says, “I’ve been working really hard for it. I’m excited to do it again. I’m already basically there for my weight, so it’s going to be a really easy weight cut. I’m healthy, so I feel really confident about that.”

In addition to working on his own skills, Byers and his team have scouted his next opponent pretty well.

“We’ve been training on my wrestling…we’ve been working a lot of Jiu-Jitsu and just the physical aspect of it,” Byers adds, “We saw this guy. He looks strong. He likes to throw people down a lot. So we did a lot of that work in order for me to really be confident up against this guy.”

Nate’s older brother, Jed, will also be fighting on the card later this month. You can check out the complete fight card below.
