Breaking down the styrofoam recycling process with SEK Recycling
SEK Recycling now recycles styrofoam, so to honor the occasion, they stopped by the studio to talk about the process.
Westco was bringing a lot of cardboard to the SEK Recycling center but they needed a place to recycle styrofoam instead of bringing it to a landfill; SEK Recycling saw that as the perfect opportunity to invest into the ability to recycle styrofoam.
With a grant supplied by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and some help from the county, they were able to purchase a machine that recycles styrofoam. A total of 75 percent of the cost was covered by grants alone.
The machine mulches the styrofoam into tiny pieces before melting the pieces at over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The point is to reduce the size and amount of styrofoam for transportation to a recycling center where it will be turned back into packaging styrofoam.
The SEK Recycling Center is open Thursday and Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.
You can find them at 615 South Joplin street in Pittsburg, Kansas or call them at (620)231-8930.
