JOPLIN, Mo. – The Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Missouri announced the start of the 3rd annual Black History Month Art Contest.

Members of the Boys & Girls Club encouraged community members to create a piece of art in recognition of black icons in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).

Leaders choose 10 finalists at the end of this month. Judges will make their decision based upon the following:

  • creativity
  • quality
  • interpretation
  • clarity of theme
  • overall impression

UScellular will display the finalists’ artwork in select stores from Feb. 1 – Feb. 28.

Area Sales Manager for UScellular Justin Skiles states, “Not only does it align with, you know, what we do as an organization, you know, in this field and something that we have continuously invested in and something we’re already doing with the Boys and Girls Club, but also it gets them to think a little differently about the contributions of the black community.”

The Boys & Girls Club will announce the top three vote-getters in March. The winners will receive prizes that include a $250 gift card for first place, a $150 gift card for second, and a $100 gift card for third.
