A local dietitian offers advice for healthy eating at home

JOPLIN, Mo. – As kids load up their backpacks and head out the door to start another year of learning, it’s important they have a well balanced breakfast to start their day.

Dietitians say breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day for a reason…its refuels your body’s energy after fasting overnight. Kids can go up to 12 hours without eating after a good nights sleep, leaving their glycogen levels low, which is why its important they eat a good source of carbohydrates in the morning to replenish the glucose stored in their body.

But that’s easier said then done as some kids tend to be picky eaters, not taking in the right resources in their morning breakfast. But as Dietitian Haley Brannan tells us, picky eating starts at home. “One of the most common things i see is what parents would describe as picky eating,” Brannan says. “My kid is such a pick eater; he only likes mac and cheese and chicken nuggets, and things like that…and that kind of stuff starts at home. So, for parents who are worried about their kid being a picky eater, we want to model health eating at home.”
