Body found after wanted man captured in Newton County

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. – Authorities discover a body on a Newton County property after a wanted man opens fire on deputies.

Sheriff’s Office deputies went to 3517 Cherry Road this morning, July 28, 2020, to serve a search warrant. They had received information that a person had possibly been killed and the body left in the woods. The location is in the Greenwood area in the north end of Newton County.

The Joplin Police Department was called to help search the property because of the size of the acreage involved.

When deputies got to the home, they knocked on the door and announced their presence, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A person inside the house then starting shooting at the deputies. No officers were injured.

According to Sheriff Chris Jennings, Freddie L. Tilton, 47, was the suspect inside. Deputies called Joplin and Newton County Swat to assist. They deployed several rounds of tear gas and arrested Tilton.

Jennings says they found a body on the property and are treating it as a homicide investigation.

Authorities have been looking for Tilton since Thursday for first degree domestic assault. According to court documents, on July 19, 2020, Tilton lured a victim to a location in Neosho under false pretense. He allegedly staged a room with several items mean to restrain the victim and then physically assaulted the victim by beating her repeatedly with a pistol. The victim was hospitalized. Read more.
